Here at Magenta Industries, helping our customers is our priority. We are here to help you make the best choice for you and your home.
Electric Hot Water Cylinders (HWC)
The electric hot water cylinder, likely the most common method of hot water heating, but is it the best and most efficient?
Firstly, there is more than one type of HWC. You can have mains pressure or low pressure, wetback, solar powered, indoor or outdoor. On top of that there are vitreous enamel and stainless-steel options available for mains pressure, while low pressure comes in vitreous enamel or copper. There are many options when it comes to choosing a cylinder, we will get into the nitty gritty details on the next blog!
For now, let us start with the pros of having an electric hot water cylinder.
- They come in a variety of sizes
- Some models are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use
- New models have triple insulation to help prevent heat loss
- Easy to turn off when not in use for long periods of time
- Cheaper installation cost
Now we know a few of the pros, what are some of the cons?
- Limited amount of hot water
- Cost of power to heat the water 24/7
- If an indoor cylinder leaks, it leaks inside your home
- They are large and take up space
- No hot water when there is a power outage
Gas Continuous Flow Hot Water Heaters
The gas continuous flow hot water heater, also known as a califont. These systems are becoming more and more common, but do we know why?
Like the hot water cylinder, there is also several types of califonts available. There are models available for both natural gas and LPG, indoor and outdoor and they come in a range of sizes depending on your needs. Unlike the hot water cylinders, all continuous flow systems are mains pressure.
So, what are the pros of this system?
- They come in a variety of sizes
- Indoor and outdoor models available
- LPG and NG models available
- Only heats water as you need it
- Lower power usage
- Compact in size
- No water storage
- The hot water will last as long as you have gas available, no surprise cold showers!
While there are many pros of this system, there are also some cons:
- More expensive to install
- Must be installed in a safe area
- Extra cost of the gas supply
- You may need to upgrade your tapware if you are upgrading from a low pressure hot water cylinder
So, there we have it. Whether you decide to go with gas or electric water heating for your home, make sure you complete some research first.
